N5424N was built from plans designed by Rand Robinson and is constructed of wood, foam, and fiberglass. Al's 2-place side-by-side aircraft is powered by a Volkswagen 60 hp engine with a wooden propeller carved by Al. First flight was in 1993. Cruise speed is 135 mph with stall at 52 mph. Al's KR2 is hangared at the Asheville Regional Airport alongside fellow EAA Chapter member Rich Thatcher's Kitfox. Al also has a classic 1946 Globe Swift based at the Henderonville Airport which he has used to provide over 115 Young Eagles flights. Al flew U. S. Air Force F-86 and F-100 aircraft for 5 years in tactical squadrons. He also served in an engineering position in which he flew C-45 (Beech 18), C-47 (DC-3), C-54 (DC-6/7) and C-130 transport aircraft. Al has been a vital member of Chapter 1016 since
