November 2022 - Covered Dish Supper and Elections!

What a great gathering! About 45 members and guests converged on the Western North Carolina Air Museum for our annual Covered Dish Supper and it was a smashing success! Great food, great people and a reasonably fair video of the occasion posted on YouTube ..

I think this is the dessert crowd .. Wow .. the food was just great!

Before supper, we remembered all those around the world who do not enjoy the freedoms we have and the food we had to eat. We remembered our Veterans a few days in advance of Veterans Day ... those men and women made - and make - it possible for us to pursue our lives, liberty and happiness.

And then we ate ... boy, did we eat ... there was a great array of food provided by our members from traditional Turkey and Ham to veggies and salads and yummy desserts .. it was all there and enjoyed by everyone.

We recognized our Technical Counselors: Jerry Marstall, Leo Dringoli, Mark Cigal, Keith Plemmons and Steve Murray. They earned pins and certificates from EAA Headquarters at Oshkosh for their service.

We also recognized our Most Valuable Player, Gary Garner, for his past service in support of visits by the EAA B-17 and his efforts to secure the B-25 for this past year, despite COVID scheduling constraints and the loss of his ability to speak. Gary is the best of EAA and we appreciate all he and Jan do for the Chapter.

The important business of the evening (besides dessert) was the election of officers for the years 2023 and 2024. Our officers serve 2-year terms.

George Heddy is our new President. George is a mechanical engineer who is semi-retired, contributing his talents part-time to a company called Survival Innovations. He flies a Cessna 172 from KAVL and has recently reached a milestone in the renovation of his airplane with a new instrument panel, windows, and seats from Survival Innovations.
Our Vice President is Michael Cavanaugh. Mike is a CFI, a glider enthusiast and tow pilot, and a FAA Safety Team representative. Mike was awarded the FAA Master Pilot award last February at his former home of Victoria TX. Mike is shown giving a young glider student his post flight critique.
Steve Murray is our Treasurer. Steve has built a Subaru powered RV-8, his current traveling RV-10 and is currently hard at work on an early RV-4 which he bought component kit by component kit from various sources. At the same time, he is exploring the mysteries of a Lycoming O-320 that he salvaged from a derelict experimental biplane. Steve is also one of our Technical Counselors.
Our Secretary for 2023-24 is Tim Higgins. Tim has been a pilot and aircraft owner for many years from simple (but demanding) Luscombes to Twin Commanches and is currently up to his elbows in the construction of an RV-12is. An accomplished musician, Tim has appeared with a number of groups across the country and is known for his virtuosity with the fiddle, banjo, mandolin and guitar.

As the year 2022 winds down, we are taking a few months off from regular monthly meetings to devote our time to the development of programs for the coming year and work on our various projects. There may be impromptu gatherings and project visits, technical visits and bull sessions as weather, time and inclination permits. All in good fun. We will resume our regular meeting schedule in March, 2023.
